Fun Friday!

Our Friday before Spring Break was filled with fun activities! After earning 50 stars (for good behavior and compliments) the students voted for a movie/popcorn/sleepover party! We enjoyed watching our movie cuddled up with our stuffed animals!

This afternoon, we were working with our kindergarten buddy class! The kinders in Room 6 taught us that an animal that comes from an egg is OVIPAROUS. The third graders helped create a project about the different oviparous animals they've learned about!

To top off this great day, our class won the Read-a-Thon this year and to celebrate all the minutes read, we were given a fun balloon party!

The students first did a balloon toss...

And then we had a "race" around the courtyard BUT we had to do it while holding a balloon between our legs!

Needless to say, it was a great time! We all were rewarded with some fantastic books for the classroom!

What a way to start Spring Break! The students deserved such a fun day after all the hard work they have done this semester. Have a wonderful Spring Break and we'll see you in April!

La Cenerentola

What a day! The SF Opera Guild was a special guest in our classroom today! Through the Opera Guid's program, Sing a Story, students learned the Italian Opera version of Cinderella, or La Cenerentola (cheh-neh-REN-toh-lah).

After hearing the story, students were chosen to play different roles and got to act out the opera to a beautiful soundtrack!

We learned that the opera version is different from the classic story of Cinderella because the composer, Gioachino Rossini, wanted to tell the story without any magic. He wanted it to seem real and focus on the human aspect of the story.

The students had so much fun playing each of the characters! We had evil step sisters, court jesters, and even heralds!

We had some pretty good dance moves too!

What fun! We hope to see the SF Opera Guild back again soon!

Franklin Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! We are enjoying a beautiful Franklin Friday!

Today we paired up to practice leading our student-led conferences! We shared our portfolios on Edublogs, our favorite entries in our Reading and Writing Notebooks, and the goals we have been working on so far this year.

We cannot wait to share what we have been learning with our families next week!

Reaching a Consensus

Today in math, Room 11 students became the teachers! Students worked in groups to solve a math task from our SWUN math program.  The students should be so proud of the way they worked together to solve their problems! Discussions were thoughtful and respectful and each student had a chance to share their method of solving the problem.

The students learned how to reach a consensus (all agreeing on the answers to the problems) by discussing how their method of solving the problem worked. Diagrams were drawn, equations were written, and articulate explanations were given!

Once a consensus was reached, students prepared a presentation for the class on how they solved their problem. It was so great to see each group work together to share the information they had learned!

Writing, Writing, Writing!

We are wrapping up our unit on Informational Writing and students are busy publishing their non-fiction books!
Students have learned about different organizational structures of a non-fiction text and are including things like Venn Diagrams and Cause and Effect Charts into their writing.

We have been having fun using Google Documents as a template for our published pieces!

Keep an eye for Room 11's Publishing Party "Book Walk" coming soon!

Welcome to March!

March has arrived and with it, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White! Our favorite third grade core literature book is something we look forward to reading all year!

We are expanding our vocabulary while reading the novel! Students help each other look up interesting words like "trough" and "injustice" to help us comprehend the story.

No Time Like the Present!

Waiting around a whole month to read about the happenings in Room 11 doesn't make sense! There is so much that happens each day we thought, "What better way to show off our learning than to make a classroom blog!"
Here you will be able to follow weekly and sometimes even daily events happening in our classroom! You can follow our blog and receive notices of updates by entering your email below! Share our blog with family members around the world!
We are so excited to get started!
