Burlingame History Tour

Today we went on one of my favorite field trips of the year! The Burlingame History Tour is a fascinating way to learn about our city's history!

We learned about the old Burlingame Railroad...

...the Easton Addition Wall...

... and the very cool Story Book Houses! Did you know Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty have houses in Burlingame??

We also had our expert "docents" present interesting facts about special landmarks around the city!

What a great day! Thank you to the Burlingame Lion's Club for making this trip possible!

Open House!

Open House was a great success! It is always such a pleasure to be able to celebrate the students' hard work! Seeing the smiles on their faces makes the night so special. Thank you to all the families who were able to make it out!

What's the Mass?

Students had a fun time weighing objects in Room 11 late last week! We learned that a kilogram contains 1,000 grams. We searched high and low for objects that weighed about 1 kilogram, 100 grams, and 10 grams. I was so impressed with their collaboration skills!

Tide Pool Exploration!

Last week we went on an incredible journey to the tide pools of Half Moon Bay! Our guides from the Marine Science Institute did an amazing job leading us.

After learning about animal adaptation and habitats, this was the perfect environment to experience it all first hand! We discovered such interesting things and had a blast!

Recap of a Great Week!

What a busy week we've had! We started a project this week to show off what we have learned about area and perimeter! Students created robots using graph paper and charted the side lengths, perimeter, and area of each part of the robot's body! A lot of hard work went in to making this cute project!

We have also started an amazing project that connects our classroom to 23 other classrooms around the country!! Through the website Projects By Jen we have signed up to participate in this year's "Picture It 2015" activity! Each classroom involved is making a quilt square that represents their class, school, and city. We are then sending out the quilt squares to each of the other classrooms. In the end, each classroom will have a huge quilt made up of squares from different elementary schools around the country! We cannot wait to see the finished result!

After taking a class vote, we decided that the quilt squares we're designing include the word "Franklin", a picture of our mascot, the falcon, and a California poppy to represent our state. They're coming out great!

To end our week, we celebrated the completion of our Informational writing unit with a Publishing Party! The students of Room 11 should be very proud of themselves! After so much hard work, students created a chapter book about a topic they are an expert on. We had everything from baseball to the immune system!
Each students shared a favorite chapter with family and friends. A Walk-About took place afterwards and we were able to walk around and read each other's books while eating some yummy breakfast treats! Good job wonderful writers!!!
